Today’s Belize photo of the day is the White-fronted Parrot and its scientific name is Amazona albifrons. This specie is also known as the White-fronted Amazon and nicknamed the Spectacled Amazon Parrot. It is named for it’s white patch of feathers on their foreheads and bright red coloring around their eyes.

Today’s photo focuses of one of the many fabulous and adventurous onsite activities offered at Chaa Creek – our ” Early morning bird walk”. Starting at 6:30am, a naturalist guide takes guests on an hour and a half of unforgettable birding experience.

The approach of 2012 is bringing increased attention on the ancient Maya civilisation of Belize and her neighbours, and, as usual with this fascinating, enigmatic civilisation, there are more questions than answers. One of the big questions is: how did Maya urban centres sustain such large populations in areas modern people would consider to be inhospitable?

Today’s Belize photo of the day is the Rio Grande Leopard Frog and its scientific name is Rana berlandieri. This aquatic frog is native to the southern US in Texas and New Mexico, and throughout south and central Mexico. This specie has been found from sea level to about 1,000 ft (333m) in elevation and may occur at higher elevations such as Belize’s Maya Mountains.

We had previously shared a blog post and video featuring My Back Yaad visiting Chaa Creek when shooting video footage for their Destination Cayo episode. Last weekend the video aired on KremTV and it didn’t disappoint audiences as they received a sweet taste of some of the activities that the Cayo District has to offer.

I just returned from an amazing educational adventure in Belize. It was a cross between “Survivor” and National Geographic. I went as a part of my Master’s in Conservation program that combines summer field experiences with collaborative projects. I climbed Maya temples, explored caves, snorkeled the coral reef, hiked through rainforests, chased howler monkeys and much more. I also attended lectures from conservationists, did daily inquiry projects and engaged with local communities.

Our friends at The Belize Zoo are doing interesting and exciting things. Already dubbed the best little zoo in the world, now it can be referred to as one of the most fascinating places to have a wedding in Belize.

Today’s Belize photo of the day is the Crimson Patch butterfly and its scientific name is Chlosyne janais. The genus Chlosyne are well recognized because of their black and orange ground colors and its species range from Mexico to Colombia, occurring from sea level to 1,200 meters above sea level.

Today’s picture of the day is the domestic Goat and its scientific name is Capra aegagrus hircu. This photo creates a special occasion since we are excited to introduce the arrival of our newest members of the Maya Farm family. Two male kids – Sylvano and Nieve(snow in Spanish), both born to their mother Cus Cus.

Today’s picture of the day is the Yucatan Black Howler Monkey and its scientific name is Alouatta pigra. This specie loves evergreen and semi-deciduous forests, remnant forest along rivers, and tall second growth. It is common throughout Belize, parts of Mexico and Guatemala unlike its relative the Mantled Howler Monkey – Alouata palliate – a little smaller specie which occurs mainly in Costa Rica.

Today’s picture of the day is the Tree-Hopper and its scientific name is Umbonia crassicornis. Tree-hoppers or Membracidae are strange little creatures closely related to the cicadas and the leaf hoppers. They usually carry an unusual protuberance which may take the form of tree branch horns or spines.

Today’s picture of the day is the Gray Fox, scientifically known as Urocyon cinereoargenteus. This particular one most of the time resides around the Macal River Camp area at Chaa Creek.

Today’s picture of the day is the Common Pauraque scientifically known as Nyctidromus albicollis. They are known as the masters of disguise since they can camouflage themselves well to blend in with their habitat.

Today’s picture of the day is the female Striped Basilisk scientifically known as the Basiliscus vitatus. These creatures are commonly encountered in the vicinity of aquatic habitats and will occasionally run for short distances across the surface of the water, hence the famous nickname the Jesus Christ Lizard.

SATURDAY July 30, 2011 – Wildlife includes all non-domesticated plants and animals, and fortunately for Belizeans, in Belize we are surrounded by nature. Today the Eco Kids learned about how important wildlife is and why they need to protect it.

With tourism growing around the world, communities are now realizing that they need their local wildlife not only for healthy ecosystems but because it provides great economic benefits.

SATURDAY July 23 2011 – Today, twenty-four children from all over Belize arrived at Chaa Creek to commence this year’s Eco Kids Camp 2011.

The eco councilors alongside the camp sponsors, the Fleming family greeted the happy kids at 3PM for a quick orientation at the Macal River Camp which will be their home for the next eight days.

Today’s picture of the day is the Giant wild Cockroach and its scientific name is Blaberus giganteus. The giant wild cockroach is one of the world’s largest cockroaches and it mostly resides in the tropics.

Today’s picture of the day is the Red-eyed tree frog and its scientific name is Agalychnis callidryas. The specific name, callidryas, is from Greek calli, a prefix meaning “beauty,” and dryas, refers to a deity or nymph of the woods.

Today’s picture of the day is that of the Central American Agouti and its scientific name is Dasyprocta Punctata. The Central American Agouti prefers tropical habitats such as Belize and is widespread in Mesoamerica and South America. The one in this picture blends in harmoniously as a local resident of Chaa Creek’s 365 acre private nature reserve and it is very much at home inside cavities of fallen rotted trees!

The picture of the day focuses on one of the three species of toads living in Belize, the common name of this specie is the RAINFOREST TOAD, and it’s scientific name is Bufo campbelli Mendelson. The toad was feeding on a few insects which are known to be part of their main diet.
