It has always been one of my most heartfelt dreams to visit the lush green of the rain forest. I go to sleep
listening to a tape of the sounds of the birds and animals of the forest, the ack, ack, of the parrots and the mournful howling of the monkeys.
The outdoors is my life, I’m a caver, mountain biker, horseback rider, and kayak-er. It would be heaven to go hiking and horseback riding on the trails of Chaa …

When I was researching hotels in Belize I came across Chaa Creek. What an amazing place to stay! Chaa Creek has everything and more I could hope to experience in Belize, from wonderful food to a couple that developed the land and has lived there for thirty years. I am sure the Fleming’s can provide some great insight to us as we too discover and learn to love Belize.

Why Belize? Peter and I joked about going to Belize a couple times. We would send each other pictures of Belize back and forth, commenting on how the place seemed so unreal. There were times when Peter and I would sneak out of real life to go on road trips. They were always the best; we always have the best time. I would love to take Peter to Belize because if there is anyone who deserves this trip, it is him.

After looking at different options for our early summer family trip we picked the country of Belize. The reason for Belize was because of its diversity in activities. Our goal was to get to see the forests and caves for a few days inland and then visit Belize’s Caribbean Sea and reefs. To start our trip off we landed in Belize City Airport we were met by the staff of Chaa Creek Lodge. As part of our package we were driven to the Belize Zoo on the way to the lodge. The Belize Zoo is a small one set in a jungle like environment. They claim their animals were never bought or captured but were rescued. The exception we were told was the beautiful jaguar captured because it strayed from its normally hunting ground to the farms nearby. After an hour at the zoo we were back in the van for the 90 minute ride. Our impression was that the Belize Zoo is nice but we would not make a special trip there.

We came to Belize with our 3 kids, 7, 10 and 12 to get off the beaten path. We had no plans or reservations and wanted to go with what grabbed us. Normally we try to avoid places like this but in Belize they are the norm. We decided to try Lodge at Chaa Creek based on the reviews. We arrived unannounced in the pouring rain and were treated as if they had spent all day waiting for us.

I want to go to Belize and do everything and see everything and know just how amazing everything is. I think I would like to go with my good friend Lauren, and we would not waste an opportunity like this. We would go snorkeling and jet skiing, and even visit the zoo and if anybody in this world deserves to do these things, I think Lauren and I would make good candidates. I think that Lauren is a good person and that she deserves something like this. You see, being college students we both live our daily routine lives working hard to get somewhere we’re not sure of yet. But for now, Belize would be a great temporary destination.

A few years ago, we visited the magic land of Belize and were enchanted by its beauty and diversity. Since we are divers, the main focus of our trip was Belize’s barrier reef, second only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. As we dove, we understood why the explosion of undersea life draws nature lovers from around the world to its waters. In Shark-Ray Alley, we swam with these magnificent creatures and were awed …

For us, one thing really stood out at Chaa Creek: The owners of this dazzlingly attractive resort have mastered the art of drawing out the best in people, wonderfully evidenced by the attitude seen in their staff – all drawn from the local population – some of whom have worked at Chaa Creek for over 28 years. Every employee we engaged with went out of their way to be friendly, positive, helpful, and knowledgeable.

“Well…”, I said, stalling for time as I thought it through, “…it means that when a 15-year old kid does not understand her own racial identity, when she’s embarrassed by her culture or doesn’t understand her culture, and when she feels discriminated against by her peers who come from a different racial group, she’s going to freeze. She’s going to live in fear.

The Tikal Tour would take us to the past capital of the Mayan empire in Guatemala. Central America is rich in the history my daughter has heard about, but not seen since she was an infant. The choices offered by Chaa Creek for day tours are fascinating and wide ranging – experience the ancient world of the Mayans and then return to the luxury accommodations at Chaa Creek.

High on the list of Belize’s many charms is a very comfortable tropical climate with an average yearly temperature of 84° F (29°C). “After our first year settling Chaa Creek we felt we had so much to be thankful for, so we scraped together our then meagre resources to throw a feast with family and friends. Ever since, it has become an annual tradition we look forward to. Over the years more and more guests would take part, and now it’s one of our favourite times of year,” said Lucy Fleming, who began Chaa Creek as a small family farm with her husband Mick and their children.
