In a dream I am walking the Mayan Rainforest Trail through the vast nature reserve of Chaa Creek. My feet make no sound in the soft leaf litter. All my senses are alive. Strange, gloriously colorful birds flit through the green canopy, and animals I have seen only in pictures peer out at me from the thick foliage of the forest floor. The plants are not familiar to me, yet I sense their powerful beneficence.

Growing up in the near-wilderness of rural Michigan, I was one with the trees and the birds and the animals. It was a time of my life that is very dear to me, especially now that I live near and work in the big ol’ city of Chicago. The hustle and bustle of business people on their lunch break, the clack-clack-clacking of the Red Line overhead, and the screaming hobos make me wish I could escape to pastoral scenes like those of my childhood. That is why the Chaa Creek sweepstakes is so appealing to me and my hubby – we want to ESCAPE to a tranquil environment where we can just relax in the great outdoors, like humans have done for eons.

Another exciting Eco-kids camp day began with a cool and overcast morning settling upon Chaa Creek’s Macal River Camp were 14 sleepy-eyed children were digging into fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, bacon, stewed beans and home made flour tortillas. After a song infused breakfast the children released the Blue Morpho butterflies that they had hatched in their own hatchery over the last few days. The butterfly release was accompanied by original camp poems and then the real excitement began!

Day three came to a start with the usual get go as the children ran excitedly to get their luscious breakfast and prepare for another adventurous day. The previous theme – The Ancient Mayas was so enthralling that it still remained in the back of their minds.

Today’s theme for the ECO KIDS Camp was The Ancient Mayas.
After the kids ate their delicious breakfast which consisted of refried beans, scrambled eggs, fresh fruits and fry jacks, they prepared to hike the trail that leads to the archaeological site of Tunchilen which is located within Chaa Creek’s 365 private Nature Reserve.
This Maya site is just a fifteen minute hike from the Macal River Camp but when the kids saw Mick Fleming in his Kawaski ‘Mule’ they begged …

“I didn’t use to care about birds until I did a bird watching course at T.I.D.E. and after that event I saw the beauty in birds. Children need to be more eco friendly . Help with clean ups & stop throwing garbage on the ground, cutting down trees for fun.

It was an exciting and eventful first day at the Chaa Creek Eco-kids Camp. The first camp wake-up call rang unnoticed as most children were up and at them by the crack of dawn. Anticipation was thick as fog as shoes were located and teeth were scrubbed. It was their first day in the jungle. The Eco-kids were not about to let something as trivial as breakfast slow their pace! To the mess haul, no delay! For most of …

For such a small, sparsely populated country, Belize has more things to do packed within its 8,867 square miles (22,960 km²) than anyplace I can think of, and I’m always the proverbial kid in a candy shop when I’m there – so many things to do, so little time. However, I do most emphatically recommend that you take time on any Belizean holiday to visit the Cayo District and San Ignacio Town – it all adds up to a tropical holiday experience you’ll never forget.

My husband and I heard about Chaa Creek and would like nothing more than to spend our vacation with you in Belize! I was born in Argentina shortly after World War II, and since my parents moved to the US in the 1960s, I have never been able to return to Central/South America. I would like nothing more than to re-enter the vibrant Latin culture that I was raised in, if only for a short …
