Chocolate has been delighting Belizeans since at least 1000 BC. In fact, the early Maya of Belize, along with their cousins the Olmec, Aztec and other Mesoamerican peoples were the world’s first consumers of this tropical fruit of the gods.
In early Maya civilisation cacao was so highly prized it was used as money. As the beverage of both the royal elite and commoners, chocolate was deemed to be vital to health and wellbeing, and to enhance love. Modern science has recently explained what the Maya have known for millennia – that chocolate makes us feel better. It has been discovered that cacao contains alkaloids such as the obromine and phenethylamine, which have an effect on serotonin levels in the brain and are thought to affect mood and enhance feelings of wellbeing.
New research also shows that there are other components in chocolate that may help prevent heart disease, cancer and other illnesses.
At Chaa Creek, where cacao has been grown, traded and consumed for centuries along the banks of the Macal River, we didn’t need experts to tell us that Belizean chocolate is wonderful – we’ve been conducting our own successful experiments for years!
